About GBP Alumni Association
What is the Alumni Association?
The Alumni Association was formed in 1977 for the benefit of former members of the Gamma Beta Phi Society who wanted to keep in touch with friends, to remain current with GBP affairs, and to remain active with the organization.
Who is eligible to join the Alumni Association?
The Alumni Association membership is open to any student member, in good standing, who leaves school for any reason and any former advisors. Each graduating student and exiting advisor will receive a written invitation to join the Alumni Association.
If a student, in good standing, is leaving school for reasons other than graduation, they may also join the Alumni Association but they must contact their chapter or the National Business Office for an application . A copy of the application is also available on this website.
How much are Dues?
Effective July 1, 2004, the dues for membership are twenty-five dollars ($25.00) per year. After ten (10) years consecutive years of membership with twenty-five dollar ($25.00) payments, the member automatically becomes a lifetime member with no other membership fees required. The member may choose the option of making a one-time payment of two-hundred fifty ($250.00) to become a lifetime member.
What are the benefits of paying dues?
All members who join the Alumni Association will receive a Membership Card, car decal, information about National and State Conventions, a newsletter or other written contact from a local chapter or state, access to the member's area of the website, and finally, upon request, a copy of the minutes from the Alumni Caucus at the National Convention. All lifetime members will also receive a Lifetime Membership Certificate from the National Headquarters.
How involved can an Alumni get with the Gamma Beta Phi Society?
The Alumni member can get as involved as they so desire. They have the same rights as student members of the organization. The only exception is they cannot vote on the state and chapter levels. Members volunteer their time at the National Convention by manning information booths, help in the hospitality room, and help in the preparation and the setup of the business meetings. They are strongly encouraged to attend State Conventions, Chapter meetings, and participate in Chapter activities.
What offices can the Alumni hold within the organization?
First there is the Alumni Member to the NEC who presides over the Alumni Caucus and is a voting member of the National Executive Committee. Second, there is the Alternate Alumni Member to the NEC who takes the minutes of the Alumni Caucus. Third, there are two Alumni Voting Delegates on the National Senate. Fourth, there are three to five members of the "Alumni Board of Governors" who are selected by the NEC Alumni Member, approved at the Alumni Caucus, and charged with making interim decisions between meetings of the Alumni Association. These members serve staggered terms of office. Finally, there are Sergeant at Arms who help count votes at business meetings, help in the seating of the voting delegates, and help with the setup of the business meetings. Since Alumni Association members cannot vote in any business meetings, some states and chapters established a non-voting advisory Alumni position within their respected councils.
What can chapters and states do to help the Alumni Association?
The Alumni Association would like all state and chapter newsletters be sent to any Alumni who resides within their areas, invite local Alumni Members to any functions held by a chapter, send state convention information to the Alumni, and finally, make them feel welcome at all meetings and activities. The best time to get the Alumni Member involved is right after they join the Alumni Association. It is almost impossible to get an Alumni Member involved with a local organization after they have been inactive for several years.
What is a State Group and how can one be formed?
Groups of Alumni Association members may form State Groups upon request to and with the approval of the National Executive Director. The State Group must serve all Alumni that resides within their state. To form a State Group, an application letter must be sent to the National Executive Director and signed by at least six Alumni Association members from within that state. The application letter will state the general purpose for the State Group, the name and address of the individual selected by the requestors to preside over the State Group, and the method by which the State Group proposes to fund its activities.
